North Korean Hackers Strike Crypto Firms Using Chromium Flaw
Targeting cryptocurrency financial institutions, North Korean hackers known as Citrine Sleet have taken advantage of a serious zero-day vulnerability in the Chromium browser. By fabricating phony cryptocurrency trading platforms, these attackers tricked victims into downloading malicious software intended to steal digital assets.
Zero-Day Flaw in Chromium
The attack, which Microsoft discovered on August 19, took advantage of a flaw in the V8 JavaScript engine of Chromium that was listed as CVE-2024-7971. Because of this vulnerability, the hackers were able to run code on compromised PCs and get around browser security measures. Using this vulnerability, the hackers targeted the cryptocurrency sector, breaking into networks and taking money.
Fake Platforms and Malicious Software
Citrine Sleet distributed the AppleJeus trojan, a piece of software that siphons off cryptocurrency payments, using fictitious trading platforms. Attackers are part of a bigger campaign to take advantage of the vulnerability for financial gain, according to Microsoft’s investigation.

However, the hackers also used a malware known as “FudModule,” which was formerly connected to Diamond Sleet, another North Korean organization. This suggests that a variety of North Korean cybercriminals are exchanging cutting-edge hacking techniques.
